2002 Tournaments

Targets for 2002
• Obtain and then increase Junior World Ranking - target achieved
• Obtain a Senior World Ranking - target achieved in August 2002 going in at 1016

• Sutton: British Tour
• Welwyn: 16u Grand Prix Winner
• Bournemouth: British Tour
• Bournemouth: $10,000
• Hatfield: $10,000
• Westside: Surrey League Doubles Final v Joy/Peterzan (with C Tee) Winner
• Chiswick: Wimbledon pre qualifying v M Brown Won, v K Paterson Won, v A Barnes Won
• Roehampton: qualified making her the youngest player in the tournament this year. Melanie took her GCSE at 9am and went out in the afternoon to play her qualifying match v Adreana Barna of Germany only losing 4-6, 4-6
• Roehampton: 18u ITF doubles (with K O’Brien)
• Edinburgh: 18u ITF
• Surbiton: Ladies Winner and 18u Winner
• Bath: $10,000 qualifying
• Bath: $10,000 Main Draw v A Hawkins Won, v A Keothavong lost in three sets
• Competed in Junior Wimbledon in both singles and doubles. Tough draws here and she lost to the No 12 seed in the singles and No 1 seeds in the doubles but gained masses of experience which she will take forward to 2003
• Member of the 18u Great Britain Team in the Summer Cup at Hatfield.
• Nottingham: 18u National Championships in Nottingham Runner up
• Nottingham: 18u National Championships doubles (with Emily Webley-Smith) reached semi final
• France: Represented Great Britain in the 16u Winter Cup in Lille
• Croatia: $10,000 qualifying
• Edinburgh: 18u ITF tournament in Edinburgh reached ¼ final
• Edinburgh: 18u ITF doubles (with K Woolley) Winner
• Ireland: Represented England in the Four Nations Tournament v M Neish Won, v R Llewellyn Won, v L Smythe Won
• Ireland: Four Nations doubles (with M Gibb)
• Represented Ladies First Team of the Wimbledon Club who reached the finals of the National Club League Tournament held in Bournemouth v K Warne-Holland Won, v M Berry Won
• Represented Great Britain v United States in the prestigious Maureen Connolly Trophy, one of the youngest player to represent Great Britain in this tournament since Sue Barker. In front of a crowd of over 200, Melanie won her match v Riza Zalameda in three sets. Zalameda ranked over 200 places higher in the WTA rankings.
• Gloucester: Ariel Grand Prix Main Draw Winner defeating J Craven, G Hingley, J Broughall, G Stoop and Rebecca Llewellyn in the final 7-6, 7-5
• Sunderland: Qualified in the $10,000 event into the Main Draw defeating Essi Laine 6-4, 6-4 and Anna White 6-2, 6-2 before losing to Emma Laine 6-7, 6-2, 4-6
• Cardiff: $25,000 Lost to a Bulgarian player (world ranking 436) 3-6, 3-6
• Southampton: $25,000 Lost to Irina Boulykina 6-7, 4-6 (world ranking 444)
• Nottingham: $25,000 Advanced to second round of qualifying defeating J Mayne 6-4, 6-3 before losing to Kustava (world ranking 385) 3-6, 1-6
• Nottingham: Advanced to the ¼ finals of the Hastings British Tour losing to Irina Boulykina 6-7, 6-1, 1-6 (world ranking 444)
• Bolton: Lost to Luisa Cowper 6-1, 3-6, 2-6 in the Senior Nationals Tournament
• Invited to train in La Manga Spain with Alan Jones and Jo Durie
• Queens Club: Advanced to ¼ finals of the Hastings British Tour BWTA event
