New Malden-based Melanie South made her senior debut at Wimbledon yesterday in the women's doubles but couldn't get past the first round despite a battling performance alongside fellow Brit Katie O'Brien.
The pair lost 6-3 6-2 to Yulia Beygelzimer and Antonella Serra Zanetti on Court 16, but having received a wildcard into the main draw, South, 19, enjoyed her day. She said
"It was a great experience. We went out there not expecting to win, because they are ranked much higher than us, but we really enjoyed it. I was nervous to begin with but got into the game gradually and felt there were patches when we played well. The standard here was much higher than I am used to but I felt it helped me raise my level.!
