British tennis players Mel South and Lisa Whybourn are back in action Down Under this week and have already made it through to the second round.
Lisa took out the world number 185 and third seed Arina Rodionova, winning the first set 6-1 and then going through after the Russian retired at 4-1 in the second.
She now faces qualifier Maria Abramovic of Croatia.
Mel, meanwhile, enjoyed a resounding 6-2, 6-0 win over Emily Fanning of New Zealand and now faces eighth seed Erika Sema of Japan.
The Brit came into this tournament in fine form after winning the doubles at last week’s $25k event in Traralgon, where she partnered Hungarian Timea Babos, a player who trains in the UK at the Gosling International High Performance Tennis Centre in Hertfordshire.
This week the pair have teamed up again and are already through to the quarter-finals following a win over their semi-final opponents from last week.
They now face Japanese sisters Erika and Yurika Sema, who are the top seeds in the doubles event.
