Melanie South makes main draw of Australian Open by rights
British number two Melanie South is to take part in the main draw of the Australian Open next week following the withdrawal of Maria Sharapova.
The Russian defending champion was forced to pull out of the opening grand slam of 2009 because she is still recovering from a shoulder injury that she had surgery on during the winter break.
However, Sharapova's misfortune has played into the hands of South - who is currently ranked number 110 in the world and reached the second round of this week's Sydney International.
South enjoyed a qualifying victory over China's Meng Yuan yesterday and today advanced to the second stage of the tournament when opponent Marion Bartoli retired with a calf strain.
The 22-year-old joins British number one Anne Keothavong in the main draw after she reached a career-high ranking of 53 this week following her run to the semi-finals of the ASB Classic in Auckland.
